The Rotary Club of Trenton extends its sincere gratitude to Villanova basketball legend Kris Jenkins for joining us and sharing his remarkable life story with our members. His presentation was far more than a look back at basketball history. It was a powerful reminder that determination, perseverance, and belief in yourself can overcome even the greatest challenges.
Jenkins’ journey to basketball stardom was anything but easy. Growing up in Washington, D.C., he faced adversity from an early age and learned the value of discipline, hard work, and resilience. Those lessons carried him to Villanova University, where he developed into one of college basketball’s most dependable leaders through relentless effort and an unwavering commitment to his team.
His name became forever etched in sports history on April 4, 2016, when he hit one of the most iconic shots in NCAA basketball history. With the National Championship on the line against North Carolina, Jenkins calmly caught the ball and buried a three pointer at the buzzer to give Villanova a thrilling 77-74 victory. That championship-winning shot instantly became one of the greatest moments in college basketball and remains a defining symbol of preparation meeting opportunity.
Following his collegiate career, Jenkins continued playing professionally, competing in several international basketball leagues while continuing to inspire young athletes through mentoring, public speaking, and community engagement.
What resonated most with our members was not simply his championship shot, but the mindset that made it possible. Jenkins spoke about embracing adversity, trusting the countless hours of preparation that happen when no one is watching, and refusing to let setbacks define your future. His message reinforced that success is rarely achieved overnight. It is earned through determination, consistency, and the courage to keep moving forward.
His story reflects many of the same values Rotary holds dear: service, leadership, integrity, and perseverance. We are incredibly grateful that Kris took the time to share his experiences and inspire our club. His words will undoubtedly stay with our members long after the applause ended.
